Table Talk · December 25, 2019

I hope that everyone who enjoys spending their time at dog shows is joining me in enjoying time at home with family and friends during this holiday season. Thank you for carving a few minutes out of your busy schedule to check in with us here for Table Talk. While we all spend time reflecting on the year past and planning for the year ahead, let us not forget our family and friends! We never know when our time will be cut short with our human and canine family members, so please take the time to relax and enjoy being around the ones you love!

It warms my heart to see the wonderful work that FIDO Pet Food Bank is doing in the Pacific Northwest. Founded by our own Nancy Martin (wife of AKC Field Rep Brian Martin), FIDO provides food and supplies for pets owned by seniors, veterans and others that could not otherwise afford to provide for their pets. Most recently, FIDO provided food for a veteran’s pet with no questions asked! If you are at a dog show out in the Pacific Northwest, and there is a fundraiser or food drive for FIDO, please consider donating. It is truly an amazing effort that affords those who have fallen upon hard times to enjoy the unconditional love of a pet. Way to go, Nancy! We are all so very proud of you! What a way to spend your time. A message to our readers: If you would like to donate to FIDO, please visit their Facebook page at Fido Pet Food Bank.

The 2019 AKC National Championship will air on Animal Planet on New Year’s Day at 6 PM EST. Please encourage your “non-doggie” friends to watch, as these broadcasts are an excellent outreach for our sport. Those of you who missed the streaming can still watch it on AKC.TV.

It was great to see Edd Bivin return to center ring in Orlando after several cancelled assignments due to his third back surgery in a year. Edd was a real trooper and completed a huge assignment at the AKC National Championship with his usual aplomb. Welcome back, Mr. Bivin. You have been missed by all of us!

The Southern Handler’s Charity League was hard at work during the AKC National Championship with their clothing sale and raffle. They raised over $10,000 this year for not only the Southern Handler’s Charity League, but also Junior Showmanship Scholarships. Congratulations and thank you to all who donated items and their time to this worthy event.

There is a movement among several fanciers to reclaim the Bred-by class in 2020. Back in the day, the Bred-By Exhibitor class was used by breeders/exhibitors to showcase their finest offspring. Over the past several years, it seems that the quality in this class has declined. This effort is meant to encourage breeders to return to showcasing their finest dogs in the Bred-By Exhibitor class.

Best wishes to Patty Keenan as she continues her move across country. Be safe, Patty. May you enjoy your new digs.

I was sorry to learn of the passing of collie breeder, handler and steward Lynn Myers from Danville, Illinois. Lynn was one of the kindest exhibitors, and one of the best stewards I have known. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Those of you who missed our Table Talk Live! coverage in Orlando can view the fun on our Canine Chronicle Facebook page and on CanineChronicle.TV. Plans are underway for our Table Talk Live! coverage in New York! If you are interested in joining in the fun, have a suggestion for a segment that you think would be interesting to our viewers, or would like to help out with a breed priority segment, please reach out to me at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com.

Photographers Kim and Angela Booth are getting ready for their annual African safari. I look forward to the beautiful photographs and videos that Kim and Angela create, as they have become an annual tradition.

Celebrating anniversaries this week are: Robin and Cindy Stansell, and Chuck Leachman and Mickey Feigelson. May you enjoy many more years of health, love and happiness.

Celebrating birthdays this week are: David Harper, Mary Dukes, Andy Linton, Linda Williams, Jeff Wright, Carol Spritzer, Bill Shelton, Jessica DiPerna, Matt Chumbley, and Bobby Schoenfeld. May you all enjoy your special day with family and friends.

My next stop is Indio, California for the beautiful Kennel Club of Palm Springs shows and specialties at the Polo Grounds. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

May you all have a Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah surrounded by those you love, especially your canine companions.

May the tears you cried in 2019 water the seeds you are planting for 2020. Be safe, be well and enjoy the moment. Until next time…
