Table Talk · April 2, 2025

Mother Nature was a bit angry this past weekend, and she wreaked havoc on locales across the country. Those that attended the shows in Michigan were fortunate that the club volunteers had everyone’s safety as their top priority and acted quickly to respond to threatening weather as it moved into their area. RVs were moved indoors to protect humans, dogs, and rigs from potential danger. A sincere thanks to everyone that helped!

I’ve been truly impressed by everyone’s patience and understanding regarding the temporary closure of the Purina Event Center, which led to the cancellation of an all-breed show and a few national specialties. Despite the disappointment, some exhibitors were able to find a silver lining, using the unexpected weekend off to spend quality time with family and friends.

The good news is the folks at Purina Farms have been working hard to minimize disruption and get the Event Center back up and running. The plan is to it ready in time for the Poodle Club of America National starting April 19th! The Gateway All-Breed cluster is on the schedule for the first weekend of May. This is great news, and it could not have happened so fast without the dedication and hard work of the staff at Purina.

Recently, exhibitors at some shows out east experienced some very long days. With two shows scheduled in one day, participants in the second all-breed show were still showing their dogs as late as 10 PM! While I truly admire everyone’s dedication and stamina, I can’t help but wonder if this schedule is in the best interest of both the humans and the canines involved. After all, dogs still need proper care once the show wraps up, and judging starts again bright and early at 8 AM! I’m curious to hear your thoughts on these late nights at shows with back-to-back shows. What are the advantages and challenges from your perspective? Please feel free to share your thoughts here or reach out to me at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com.

Do you every wonder why same number of dogs can be judged faster on Sundays when coincidentally people have flights to catch and want to get home? Exhibitors need to remember that breaking down set-ups and loading is noisy, and we should show respect for those who competing in Best In Show. We must all remember that one loud bang can ruin a dog’s performance. Remember that could be you in the Best In Show ring “losing” your dog to just one loud bang!

Sincere condolences go out to Shawn Nichols who lost his baby brother, Ryan Michael Nichols, suddenly to a massive heart attack while on holiday with his family. Please keep Shawn and his family in your thoughts during this most difficult time.

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include Olivia Uyeno, Todd Jacobs, Peggy McDill, Stan Matsumoto, Justin Van Deren, Sarah Perchick, Chris Jones, Barb Ohmann, and Lesli Smith. Best wishes for a great day, and a smooth trip around the sun!

My thought for this week is in honor of all our dogs that try to please us week-in and week-out!  Living with a dog is like having a personal cheerleader who thinks every day is the best day ever as long as you are together!

Be safe out there my friends. May the week bring you beautiful puppies and dreams about wins. Be kind to all and enjoy the moment. Until next time…
