It is day 17 since I returned from Louisville and, frankly, it feels like a lifetime ago! In my humble opinion, there are some positives in being forced to stay home, so I am going to continue to focus on those aspects. Might as well, right? I now have somewhat of a routine, which has been very helpful for my mental and physical health! I have a few folks who humor me every morning and allow me to lead them in an hour-and-a-half or so of torture–I mean exercise (big grin). A big shout-out to my oh so tolerant friends Larry Cornelius, Tiffany Skinner, Vicki Seiler-Cushman, Loran Morgan, and Mercedes Vila. I look forward to our daily gathering! The biggest negative of this quarantine thing is that I cannot see the people I love so much! Our daily exercise routine brings at least a few of us together! It’s a good thing that I have these daily workouts as I am really enjoying cooking for Robert every day! I certainly could not let him eat by himself, right?!?
I am thrilled that there is a bit of good news for handlers and other self-employed friends in the fancy whose livelihoods were suddenly brought to a screeching halt. The Coronavirus unemployment benefit provisions of the recent Coronavirus Relief Bill provide for coverage to self-employed and freelance individuals. With proof of income, you will be able to collect at least 50% of the average payout in your state. In addition, you may be eligible to collect the weekly supplemental coronavirus payment. For those of you who would like to take some of your extra time at home to broaden your canine knowledge, The American Kennel Club is offering breed education webinars daily. I believe that they started this initiative before the pandemic, but escalated the effort given the current situation. Webinars are free and offered to everyone. I believe judges get education credit for attendance. Look for details on the AKC website. If you have free time, why not broaden your knowledge?
The AKC is also doing an education series for clubs. In these uncertain times, getting as much knowledge and as many ideas as possible for clubs may be a great use of the extra time spent at home.
I look forward to seeing dogs in amazing condition and trained to the nines when we return to shows my friends!!!! Use this time to celebrate with your dogs and your families!!!
I heard the Irish Setter Club of America has rescheduled their National Specialty for August 18-23 at the same venue in Greeley, CO. If your club has canceled and rescheduled your show for later in the year–either a specialty or an all-breed–give me a shout-out and I will be happy to mention it.
The Denton, TX newspaper did a lovely article about Doris Cozart and her three-time judging assignment at Westminster. I was shocked when I learned that Doris is 83 years young! She is such an amazing woman who looks amazing to boot!
