Table Talk · 10/4/23

I just returned from the Doberman National Specialty, and what a great experience it was!  The venue was the University Plaza Convention Center in Springfield, Missouri and it is a great location for a National Specialty.  With a total entry of 351 dogs the day of the National, the convention center comfortably accommodated a National of this size; in fact, it could have handled a larger entry!  One of the things that stands out to me is the club’s procedure for taking photos between the classes.  What a great way to avoid the long lines for the photographer and give the judge an opportunity to leave the ring, clear their head, stand for 4 photos, then return to the ring for further judging. Congratulations to everyone involved with putting on the 2023 DPCA National!

Sadly, the Suffolk County Kennel Club had to cancel their all-breed show that was scheduled for Saturday, September 30th due to weather and a state of emergency that was declared for the area.

Best wishes to the Arrowhead Kennel Club that will hold its first all-breed dog shows this coming week in Buckeye, Arizona.  Arrowhead is a new club, holding new shows, at a new venue!  Entries for the inaugural shows are right around 700 which seems like a respectable number for new shows.  The shows will be held at an equestrian facility.  These new shows are a boon for fanciers in the area as shows have been dwindling, and appropriate facilities are very difficult to find.

Fall is in the air and that means it is time for the greatest terrier show on earth!!!  Terrier fanciers from all over the world are currently making the trip to Macungie, Pennsylvania for this year’s show.  With an entry of 1,329, it is larger than the 2022 entry.  Scottish Terriers have the largest breed entry at 111.

I’d like to give a shout-out to my friend, Bill McFadden, who will be judging the West Highland White Terrier Specialty boasting an entry of 60 Westies!  Have fun on the “other side” my friend!

Congratulations to Kasey O’Brien who recently graduated with a degree in Supervision and Management.  As a gift to herself, Kasey is taking a one-month trip to South America!  First stop, Chile.  Safe travels, my friend.  Enjoy your trip.

Many breeders that are also professional handlers are appealing to the American Kennel Club to allow them to participate in the 4-6 month puppy competition.  Fanciers are asked to send a letter to the AKC requesting reconsideration of the current guidelines that do not allow professional handlers, or their family members or assistants, to exhibit puppies in the 4-6 competition.

Healing thoughts go out to Ron Freeman who is recovering from surgery.  As a result, he and his wife, Debbie Campbell-Freeman, had to cancel their recent judging assignment in Washington.  We look forward to having you back in the ring soon, my friend.  In the meantime, get some rest along with a complete recovery.

The fancy is mourning the loss of several of our own this past week.

Professional handler Barbara Humphries Gossett–who was also a mentor to many–passed away last Wednesday.  She was 86 years young.  Barbara will be remembered for her love and grace in the show ring.  Condolences to her many friends and family members at this difficult time.

The Manchester Terrier community is mourning the loss of Jerri Hobbs who passed away unexpectedly this past week.  Jerri was known as a lovely lady and a passionate breeder of Manchester Terriers.  Sympathies go out to her family and friends.  She will be sorely missed.

It is with great sadness that I pass along the news that Pembroke Welsh Corgi fancier Patty Hosmer lost her battle with breast cancer.  Patty is remembered for her good sportsmanship and dedication to her breed.  Patty will be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing her.

Diane Baker let us know that her beloved friend, partner and mate, Fred Konrad, passed away in early September.  Diane remembers Fred as an accomplished, charming, well-versed man.  Donations in Fred’s memory can be made to Take the Lead.  Our sympathies are with Diane and Fred’s friends and family at this most difficult time.

Happy Anniversary to Robin Novack and Laura King!  Here is hoping you newlyweds continue to enjoy great love and success.

It is another big birthday week for the fancy!  Celebrating birthdays this week are Frankie Dubman, Sarah Krickeberg, Robin Novack, Cindy Stansell, Loran Morgan, Corey Benedict, Karen Mammano, Amy Duncan, Gia Garofalo and Anna Stromberg.  Make your special day a great one, my friends–your day only comes once a year!!!

Here is my thought for the week:  Never stop doing your best because someone does not give you credit!!!

Be safe out there, my friends!  I’ll see you down the road.

Until next time…
