Crufts 2013 – About The Judges
By Kerry L Rushby
Ferelith Somerfield – Working Group
Ms. Somerfield told us, “It is always an honour to be invited to judge a group, and especially so at Crufts. This time there is another reason for it to be special, as I am retiring from judging at the end of the year; this will be my last Crufts (although I hope to be fit enough to go to the show as a visitor!)
“As I had already judged all the groups and Best In Show at Crufts, I never dreamed that I would have another chance but, in fact, this will be the second time I have judged the Working Group as I was first given it in 1988 when it was combined with the pastoral breeds as well as the working.
“I first judged the working group at Leeds in 1973 when my top two winners came from the pastoral breeds. I did better in 1974 when my top two came from the working breeds!
“In all I think I have judged the group either before or after division on 32 occasions.
“My main base in the group is obviously the Boxer through Stafford and Dibbie Somerfield, although Dobermanns come a close second through Fred and Julia Curnow.
“I award CCs in all the working breeds except Mastiffs. I am proud to have judged most of the breeds at breed club level, and the others at Crufts or group shows.
“Perhaps I should add that I am sorry to retire from judging but all good things have to come to an end. I shall continue to support the world of dogs in every way possible, and hope that everyone involved has as good a time as I have had in this marvelous hobby.”
