In 2025, the Royal Windsor Dog Show has once again raised the bar for what an exquisite dog show is truly about. A carefully curated judges’ list, immaculate attention to detail, superb facilities, prime location, and excellent marketing drew an impressive entry of 9,329 dogs, including quite a few overseas exhibits. The newly introduced Afternoon Tea proved to be a brilliant idea, with nearly all time slots sold out. The show once again confirmed that it has only a few peers around the world and is certainly one of the premier events for dog enthusiasts globally.
Champagne, strawberries, sunshine—Windsor!
Thursday was all about the Gundogs, and from a stunning line-up of breed winners emerged the Curly Coated Retriever female, Nor/dk/se Sh Ch Skaringen’s First Impression, as the Gundog Group winner under Gavin Robertson (Soletrader, UK). Fresh from her group win at the Vejen International in Denmark, she was a clear ringside favorite among spectators, exhibitors, and experts alike. She is bred, owned, and presented by Jostein Skare Thygesen from Norway and was also this year’s Best of Breed winner at Crufts. Jostein is currently considered one of the top breeders in the breed.
Many of us were rooting for her to take the top award on Sunday, but her Reserve Best in Show at the world’s most royal dog show is an outstanding achievement–especially for such a numerically small breed. Listed today as a rare breed, the Curly Coated Retriever is the tallest of the retrievers and is easily distinguishable by the mass of tight curls covering its body. Originally bred in England for upland bird and waterfowl hunting, it remains a unique presence in the ring.
Group 2 went to the Hungarian Vizsla (smooth-haired) female, Sh Ch Layways Cinnamon Girl, owned by Shaun Layton.
