When Cropping/Docking is Banned, People Start Importing

By Caroline Coile

According to the annual report of the UK PAW Report, imported dogs now account for 8% of the UK’s total canine population, or roughly 900,000 dogs. Of these, the owners of 4%–accounting for roughly 26,000 dogs–said they chose to import a dog because they specifically wanted a dog with cropped ears, and 3% (17,000 dogs) because they wanted a dog with a docked tail. Docking and cropping are illegal in the UK, but allowances are made for imported dogs that have already been cropped or docked. Animal rights activists are now working to close the loopholes that allows docked and cropped dogs to be imported.
