If you’ve been participating in the sport of dogs for a while, you probably have plans with backup plans in place. Between travel, lodging, weather, vehicles, schedules, dogs you leave home in the care of others, and the beautiful living beings you travel with, there are a lot of things that could go wrong. You probably carry a first-aid kit for dogs, whether or not you carry one for yourself. You probably keep a blanket in your car, and maybe even a travel pillow. Dog food is prepped, people snacks are packed, and the cooler has the necessary liquids and perishables on ice. There are probably gloves and muck shoes and an umbrella or raincoat tucked into a tote in your vehicle, right next to a tarp or sun cloth and clamps. You’re prepared.

What if things not in your contingency plans happened? Sometimes things happen that are so bizarre it could feel like you’ve landed in an episode of Black Mirror or The Twilight Zone. Here are some what-ifs, in no particular order, that could derail your plans for the weekend, the next month or two, or the rest of your dog-show life.

• What if your van broke down in a no-cell-service zone, in the middle of nowhere, with hardly any other vehicles on the road?
