This year’s Morris & Essex show, held at Colonial Park, New Jersey, was a delight, other than a challenging parking scenario that had some competitors facing long waits and walks to the rings. The weather was bright and sunny, but unexpectedly brisk, boosting the sales of M&E branded wear and making the women whose period costumes included their grandmother’s fur tippets the envy of all.
And somehow, a show midweek feels like playing hooky, though it is presumably scheduled not to interfere with adjacent weekend shows like Hatboro, Devon, and Montgomery.
In a 14-hour day, you can learn a lot. It’s as if all the energy, and possibility, and knowledge that is a show becomes compressed into its essential elements. There are movies that use this phenomenon as a plot device; and it also happens during weddings–and unexpected layovers at airports.
What you learn depends on where you wind up, and who you talk to at that moment. I had a perfect soup-to-nuts day, reflecting the experience of the show from many angles. It helped, of course, to have talked to founder Wayne Ferguson, first; I saw some things, like the giant red elms; the explosively beautiful flower arrangements at every ring; and the general air of cheerful fun through his eyes.
