By Wayne Cavanaugh

It would have been good television. Genre: Crime Thriller, Comedy, Success Story. Setting: About 30 miles north of San Francisco where a Contra Costa Kennel Club meeting is convened to clean up a mess. Time: 2008, the Financial Crisis rocks the Stock Market, and the former Contra Costa treasurer takes the club’s money and runs. Antagonist: An empty till. Protagonist: A wild idea.

Background: The former club treasurer is convicted of grand theft of the club’s money, is arrested in his home, pays some restitution to the club, and does jail time. Contra Costa Kennel Club is in shambles. Cold Open: Enter Kimberly Meredith. She stands before her kennel club peers with an inspired grin. Action: Kim announces a new idea to save the club, refill its treasury, and grow the entry. The new idea is … tie-dye. Jaws drop, crickets. Fade to black.

Yes, Kim’s secret weapon was multi-colored, swirly, far-out, tie-dye. When Bill McFadden heard the news he said, understandably, it was the dumbest idea he ever heard. A few years later, dripping in brilliant tie-dye, Bill had dominated the hippy costume contest so many times that he kindly withdrew from competition. The man is a winner. Stage left.

The initial reaction was expected. I mean really. The club was in dire straits, the economy was tanking, and the sport was feeling the pain. But Kim truly believed that asking everyone to dress like a hippy would save the day. Reboot the club and grow the show by encouraging people to dress like Haight-Ashbury, 1967, the Summer of Love. Purportedly, after the meeting, a search of Kim’s purse showed no trace of hallucinogenic remnants left over from 1969. Instead, she just had a darn good idea. And guess what? It worked.
