Got a dog you want to show? Before you go to handling class, here are the two basic behaviors your show-dog-in-the-making needs so you’ll succeed.

Beware–they sound sinfully simplistic, and they are fundamental to your success. You CAN teach them to your dog, beginning right now. Think of training–any kind of training–as teaching fun tricks. When you’re having fun, your dog will be having fun, too. Keep your sessions short and only train when you’re feeling happy. Keep small stashes of soft, yummy treats either in your pocket at all times or placed where you can reach them quickly, so you can reward quickly. If you already know how to use a clicker to train, use it. If not, no worries–you can still teach these two fundamentals easily.
