The dog game is designed to focus our attention on clearly defined milestones and let’s face it, we are all running this marathon toward some particular finish line. Obviously, we’re aware of the incredible stories underlying those brief, history-making achievements. But it’s worthwhile to remind ourselves of that fact. Success in this sport is a long, complicated reality.

The entire Poodle breed could easily qualify as proof of that fact. Currently, all three Poodle varieties are considered enduringly tough competition. Whenever a Poodle goes Best In Show, the general reaction is resignation to that longstanding perception of their invincibility.

That’s a shortsighted interpretation, mainly because the Poodle’s mere viability was a doubtful prospect for many years following AKC recognition. Despite the advantage of official status, both registrations and entries confirmed the moribund state of America’s Poodle game for decades.

Revising that downward trajectory was no lucky accident. An incredible amount of determined effort led to the Poodle’s dominant position in the sport. As we know, the celebrated Duc signaled the start of this trend when he became the first Poodle to win Westminster in 1935. Often described as a stallion of a dog, his magnificent ring presence certainly invited the fascination of the American public. From a more insular perspective, that win represented multiple historical milestones.
