I’ve bred quite a few litters in my time (Boston Terriers, Miniature Smooth Dachshunds and Standard Smooth Dachshunds) and the one thing that’s always really struck me was the difference in behaviors of the various puppies produced.
Comparing Bostons to Dachshunds was like comparing chalk to cheese; from the length of time it took their eyes to open, the first crawl, the level of noise produced, to general cleanliness, the puppies acted completely differently.
What was even more surprising to me was the difference in attitude and character between the Miniature Dachshund vs. Standard Dachshund litters–the mini pups were always up on their feet early and were very, very noisy!
The Standard pups were far slower, more laid back and were so quiet. They were also a complete joy when it came to housebreaking…we won’t even mention the Miniatures in this regard!
Recently, someone sent me a video of a Siberian Husky litter. The puppies were aged around 7-8 weeks (completely adorable) and they were simply pottering around their pen, as puppies do, when, all of a sudden, each one of the eight or so babies threw back their heads and started howling.
They were then joined in their impromptu ‘sing-song’ by their mother.
It was fascinating to watch the performance and quite beautiful to hear–although I’m not sure I’d want to be their neighbor!
