The AKC recently announced it was their 140th birthday, but I’m sure it was not the way they wanted to celebrate it. Because that same week we heard the rumor that several judges were being suspended for accepting gifts from a handler. Phone lines and social media were buzzing about the affair, even though nobody was able to come up with any real evidence. Show chairs were already writing them off in preparation for their suspension, but the judges themselves spoke up and declared they had heard nothing about it.

And dog show people seem primed to believe it when they hear the tail of a top winning team gaining their wins by less-than-honest means.

Sure, there are whispers of dye jobs and braces and ear fixes, of drugged dogs and even substituted dogs, but–except in rare cases–nothing ever comes of them. And we all scan the suspension notices for the latest name to lose their temper and use foul or abusive language. However, nothing quite grabs the imagination like a tale of bribery.
