The Borzoi Miracle – A Devastating Injury Leads To An Unbelievable Recovery

Every breeder dreams of the dog that makes it all worthwhile. Investing incalculable time, work and money, day after day– and there are NO days off in this biz. But finally, it all pays off. Jackpot, that dream dog arrives and justifies all the other stuff; and at that point, it often seems like a miracle, which is perfectly reasonable under normal circumstances. But this story is about a true dog breeder’s miracle–actually several miracles–starting with the arrival of the star of this story.

It’s better to let her owner, Dr. Victoria Cassano tell it. “The back story. Her mother was a Grand Champion Silver Dual Champion. Her first litter in 2018 turned into an emergency c-section. We only got one puppy and that one didn’t survive. She had hyperhydramnios.” As far as pregnancy complications go, this one can be off the charts dangerous. Risks include premature labor, placental abruption, umbilical cord prolapse, hemorrhage and stillbirth. In other words, it does not bode well for a good outcome.

“So the second pregnancy was a big risk. That time we did a surgical implant with fresh semen, and I ended up with two puppies delivered by c-section four years ago on December 11. Since they were born on Hanukkah, I decided to use that theme. So the first two letters of the dreidel are gimel and nun so the boy is called Gimel and she is Nun, which signifies ‘great miracle’ on the dreidel.” Nice name, but Torie had no idea exactly how appropriate it would become.

The Borzoi is one of those breeds that immediately grabs attention. Many people fall in love with the breed before they ever meet one. Elegant, glamorous, exotic–they are showstoppers and it’s easy to imagine the fun part. On the other hand, this is a big, sturdy sighthound, built for hard running and–for the record–designed to take down a wolf. Owners must be prepared for the whole package.
