Take a moment. Count the number of face masks you have. Are you surprised both by the amount, and variety, of masks you now possess? Over these past many months, like so many of us, I have purchased and acquired a wide array of facial masks. Honestly, it was something to which I had never given a single thought. Now, finding the correct size to fit my small face, to make it easy to wear for hours and, of course, to look good, has been a challenge. Just being able to find masks with comfortable ear loops took far more effort than I ever would have imagined. Too many of them hurt the back of my ears and caused my pierced earring backs to fall off. I’ve been told that I am not the only one who has lost a favorite earring that way! Fortunately, mine was recovered.
At dog shows, when I look around, I notice masks of all colors, shapes, materials, and sizes. Our continually covered faces create an ever-changing mobile patchwork quilt. Some of the masks fit well and fulfill their purpose. Others, which fall down below the nose or remain open on the sides, are useless. Yet, there they are, an endless visual delight to capture our attention–for better or worse.
One kind exhibitor, at a breed specialty where I was judging, left a silky soft mask depicting her breed on the judge’s table for me. I took it out of the wrapper and wore it that day. It was perfect. If you take the time to notice, fabulous masks exist in many genres. What is your favorite? Different themes like breeds, sports teams, sparkles, caricatures, lace, Disney, slogans, or whatever it is you like, allow us to display a bit of our personality when we wear them. They become topics for discussion and, often, a good laugh. It’s fun to see how we can be creative and playful with them while they are doing a serious job.
