The Big E – Effervescense

It was a typical weekday morning for me. I met my friend Wendy at the local commuter parking lot to do some miles. The lot is located at a brick and clapboard office building in our charming town. There is a plethora of parking spaces available now. The commuter bus to Wall Street is on hiatus at the moment. Other than a consistent ebb and flow of customers for the finger printing service at the front of the building, there are fewer people and cars at the building.

On the days that we do not have an early morning workout group at our small boutique gym, we tend to get started earlier. This was one of those days. A change in the previous day’s weather forecast actually helped. We laughed over the fortunate switch from rain to clouds with a warmer temperature too, more like spring than predicted. We cheerily left our parking spots and headed for the street.

We have a few routes we follow depending on the time of day and the season. This particular one takes us through a nice, hilly housing development before we descend to the adjacent Victorian neighborhood with its streets of colorful, well-kept, historical homes. There is always some visual and fragrant delight to enjoy, especially in spring. Whether ooh-ing and aah-ing over the magnificent weeping cherry tree in full bloom in front of one house or inhaling the intoxicating smell of the hyacinths planted in front of another, pleasure abounds.

On this particular morning, we ascended to the very top of the hill at the end of the development. Crossing into the cul-de-sac on the other side of the road, we both noticed a neighbor coming out of her house with her dog. I helped her find his breeder not very long ago. A mutual dog friend suggested she call me after her beloved fourteen-year-old Havanese left this earth. Knowing the love and care she gave to that dog, I did not hesitate for a moment to assist her. There they both were, this very happy little fellow with his tail going nonstop and his proud owner.
