Outside the French doors that open up to the courtyard, an unexpected, heavy, wet snow is falling. The weight of the snow is bending the big branches on the trees, still naked of their leaves. As the wind begins to blow ever harder, the snow flies through the air, landing on the bricks which have been cleared of snow more times today than I care to recount. From my vantage point at the kitchen island, I am watching a robin go in and out of the big sugar maple tree where its nest must be. “Poor robin,” I say silently to myself. “I bet this is no fun for you either.” Even as we change our clocks forward tonight, it is obvious. Spring is not ready to make an appearance.
The snowdrops–pretty little white bulbs which peek from the ground as winter flows into spring–had a week of warmer weather. For them, colder is preferable to warmer. With the speedy return of freezing temperatures, they will burrow their way through the snow to be seen again. I guess that equates with the necessity of clearing the snow from the bricks in the courtyard. Like the robins and snowdrops, we all have some extra work to do.
Extra work! What I keep thinking is who needs any more extra work to do? If there is one thing we can agree upon, it would be precisely what we all encountered over the past two years–nothing came easily. Do you remember the quest for paper towels, cleaning products, and a vaccine appointment? I recall spending hours on all my electronic devices for days and days to garner an appointment to travel, more than an hour, to get that first jab. What about standing in line to have your temperature taken, filling out your release form, and maintaining social distance as a requirement to attend a dog show?
