The thing to remember about the animal rights movement is fanaticism. Strictly defined….. it’s ‘excessive enthusiasm and intense uncritical devotion toward some controversial matter (as in religion or politics)’. Okay, this brand is not about religion or politics but uncritical devotion is completely apt nonetheless. And that is the truly dangerous part of it. Do not expect sensible views or moderation to enter their approach at any point.
In other words, when it comes to AR crusaders, logic and compromise go right out the window. It’s all or nothing. And that’s what we are facing folks. They are intent on annihilating purebred dogs and they will do it by the proverbial thousand cuts. To that end they are prepared to lose countless battles–because they have the financial resources to match their fanaticism.
Last year’s horrifying courtroom bloodbath in Norway made that clear. The Norwegian Kennel Club was nearly bankrupted fighting baseless accusations that they promote poor breeding practices and disregard animal suffering. The resultant verdicts and appeals went all the way to Norway’s Supreme Court. In the end the AR fanatics succeeded in outlawing Cavaliers (and some top breeders) in that country, thereby encouraging less scrupulous sources to fill the demand for a very popular breed. And that’s already happening. From that straightforward perspective, it accomplished nothing. But that’s not how the AR folks look at it. From their perspective, all that baseless litigation was a resounding success. It brought global attention to their specious claims. Meritorious or not, the hysterical media coverage succeeded in undermining public trust in purebred dogs.
