The American Kennel Club Honors Heroic Canines With AKC DOGNY Paw Of Courage Award
The American Kennel Club (AKC®), the world’s largest purebred dog registry and leading advocate for all dogs, is honored to recognize K9 Archer of Madison County Sheriff’s Department in Madison, FL., and K9 Jacky with the Port of Portland Police Department in Portland, OR., with the American Kennel Club’s DOGNY Paw of Courage Award.
The AKC DOGNY Paw of Courage demonstrates appreciation for the work that dogs do in the service of humankind. This award recognizes dogs who serve their communities, making great impacts on the lives of their human counterparts.
“These two canines have demonstrated their dedication and commitment to keeping their communities safe every day,” says AKC Executive Secretary, Gina DiNardo.” The American Kennel Club is proud to honor these two incredibly deserving canines, K9 Archer and K9 Jacky.”
K9 Archer, Madison County Sheriff’s Department, Madison, FL
K9 Archer was an energetic and social dog. His work ethic was unquestionable and regardless of what he was asked to do, he did it wide open. He was the go-to dog when the department got a new handler to see if they could handle the bite work. Archer took his job seriously and with pride and his two handlers Anthony Land and Marcus Roell would agree. Archer was not a “house dog” unless you lived in a house where you didn’t mind if things got broke. He knew two speeds, dead stop and wide open.
After six long years employed at the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, K9 Archer, unfortunately, passed while playing an important role in capturing a suspect. Archer will be remembered for his service and playful heart.
K9 Jacky, Port of Portland Police Department, Portland, OR
K9 Jacky began her remarkable journey at Lackland Air Force Base, where she trained as an explosive detection canine under the TSA’s expert guidance. Quickly earning top honors in her class, she embarked on an adventure to Portland, Oregon. There, Jacky works as an Explosive Detection Canine on the public transportation system, covering three counties with unwavering dedication. Her vibrant energy and playful spirit captivate everyone she meets. Witnessing Jacky in action is truly heartwarming; she’s quick, spirited, and seems to revel in every moment of her work. Over her career, Jacky has devoted over 300 human hours—equivalent to
2,100 dog hours—ensuring safety at major events like the Super Bowl LVII, MLB All-Star Game, and the World Athletic Championship. Whether at local marathons or high-profile events, Jacky’s presence ensures a secure environment. When she’s not on duty, Jacky explores the scenic Pacific Northwest, though her true joy is found in her work. Her dedication and enthusiasm remind us that with passion, anything is possible.
