Puerto Rico, A Tropical Treat

August 2012

by Eleanor Abarca

Puerto Rico, the beautiful “Isle of Enchantment” welcomed judges and exhibitors to our “Tropical Treat Cluster” All-Breed & Obedience shows held from April 26-29, 2012. There were competitors from different areas of the United States, and South America as well as a large group representing Puerto Rico. Beautiful dogs of various breeds put on an outstanding show for the spectators and when judge Dr. Gerard C. Penta made his final decision for Best In Show on Thursday, he chose the beautiful Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH. Wedigit Paparazzi.

For the other three days of shows, judges Johan Becerra-Hernandez, Norman L. Patton and Mrs. Robert S. Forsyth were unanimous in choosing the wonderful Lhasa Apso, GCH. Xeralane’s Kid Rock as their Best In Show dog.

Distinguished judges Johan Becerra, Kenneth Di Lorenzo, Mrs. Robert Forsyth, David Haddock, Norman L. Patton, Dr. Gerard C. Penta, Mrs. June Penta, Sharon Ann Redmer and Nikki Riggsbee were housed at the Condado Conrad Hotel overlooking the beautiful Atlantic Ocean where they enjoyed the pleasant sea breezes as well as fine restaurants and a large casino for those who wanted to try their luck.

Many of the exhibitors stayed with their dogs at the San Juan Beach Hotel also located on the beach in the Condado area approximately thirty minutes from the show grounds which is an air-conditioned coliseum in Bayamon.  For those who are traveling in groups or accompanied by many dogs, there are also nearby houses and apartments available for rent if preferred.

These hotels and apartments are also located only minutes from historic Old San Juan with its quaint cobblestone streets, unique architecture  and Spanish fortresses dating from the year 1539.  Puerto Rico has a long and interesting history, one of its first visitors being Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the New World.  Many people know of Juan Ponce de Leon as the explorer who searched for the Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine, Florida. However, they don’t know that before that he established the first settlement in Puerto Rico and became the first Governor of the Island in 1508.

For those visitors who are able to spend a few extra days in Puerto Rico to do some sightseeing, you will find beautiful sandy beaches with warm tropical waters as well as the mountainous area of the Caribbean National Forest which includes “El Yunque”. This is a beautiful rain forest with wild parrots, rivers, waterfalls and orchids growing wild in the lush landscape filled with trails for exploring.

The Caribe and Ponce Kennel Clubs would like to invite you to join us from October 25th through the 28th of this year for our next All-Breed and Obedience shows, the “Caribbean Classic”. Remember that Division 12 of the AKC  Schedule of Points is comprised of Puerto Rico and we have the lowest point schedule in the United States.  Come down and let us introduce you to the wonders of our “Isla del Encanto”, Puerto Rico!
