Pay No Attention to the Man Behind the Curtain… David Helming Comes Forward

By Sarah Montague

In the days (remember those days?) when the Westminster Kennel Club show was held at Madison Square Garden, and subsequently at Piers 92 and 94, did you give a thought, as you plunged across town, from the Hotel Pennsylvania to the edge of the Hudson, or wrangled your breed winner to Group judging, who it was who made all of this possible?

The answer is, a man considerably more self-effacing, and less trickster-ish, than Frank L. Baum’s Wizard of Oz – David A. Helming.

Helming is the Club’s Co-Show Chairman, and Chief of Staff, and while in some worlds a chairman is more of a figurehead, or deals only at a very high level, Helming’s job is hands-on and encompasses everything from lightbulbs to landscapes.

He has the perfect background for the job—he’s a former engineer and a top breeder. His father had a construction business, and Helming has a bachelor’s and a master’s in civil engineering. “I spent three years in the Army Corps of Engineers, and that was followed by about 38 years for the Public Service Enterprise Group, who’s the main holder of the utility in New Jersey. I had various engineering and senior managerial positions in various facets of the business.”

These included instituting an environmental program—a first—as well as a wide array of technical initiatives. I comment that this work seems the perfect foundation for getting to understand infrastructure and for learning how to serve a community.
