This week is the 45th anniversary of my first “official” AKC point show assignment! The show was the Summer Harrisburg Kennel Club show, and my assignment was Afghan Hounds.

I remember it so clearly as this was one week after my first grandchild was born–a hurricane hit Long Island, and I had my first assignment coming up! Jim and I knew the baby was on the way. My daughter and her husband lived in Des Moines, Iowa, and the idea was to beat the stork. We were driving Mike’s new car and trying not to get arrested for speeding!

We arrived shortly after Derek was born–his 45 birthday was yesterday! We spent a few days with the new little family when we received news that a hurricane was in the Atlantic and heading straight for Long Island. At that time our home was in Freeport, right on the Atlantic shore. Patrick and Michael were home alone with all the Afghans and Salukis, and A HURRICANE WAS HEADING STRAIGHT FOR THEM!
