2019 Westminster Group and BIS and Junior Showmanship Judges Comment on Their Placements
Note: The 143rd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on February 12 and 13 had an entry of more than 2,800 dogs in 203 breeds and varieties. We asked the seven group judges and Peter Green, the Best in Show judge, to talk about their assignments and placements. They were all kind enough to participate after a long week in New York City. Their comments follow:
THE HOUND GROUP
The Hound Group was first into the Garden’s enormous ring on Monday night. Judge Patricia Trotter of Carmel, California judged the group that she had won 11 times as the breeder-owner-handler of the Vin-Melca Norwegian Elkhounds. “My sincere thanks to the Westminster Kennel Club for allowing me the privilege of judging the glorious 2019 Hound Group,” she wrote. “And thanks to the expert breed judges for the outstanding individuals they chose to send to it, making it both a super strong and very deep group.”
Her placements were:
Group One:
GCHP DC Walmar-Solo’s OMG SL JE (Longhaired Dachshund)
Bred by Kim Vidrine, Paula Carter, and Wally and Mary Jones
Owned by: Theresa Nesbitt, Kim Vidrine, Jeane Haverick, Audrey White, and Patricia Grant
“The winning Long-haired Dachshund is blessed with the correct wrap-around front and well-fitted elbows. His lovely head and expression are very proper for the breed, as is the entire profile. He covered ground easily and carried a strong topline while moving with determination and bold self-confidence. With his splendid condition and degree of fitness, everything about him indicated he could go to ground with the best of them.”
Group Two:
GCHB Pinnacle Kentucky Bourbon (Whippet)
Bred by Justin Smithey and Yvonne Sovereign
Owned by Dr. Ken Latimer, Judy Descutner, and Justin and Cheslie Smithey
“The Whippet bitch was a close second and contains all the right curves in all the right places. Her aerodynamic structure is accented by the desired elegance and symmetry of the sighthound. She is a rare combination of femininity and power and is correct both standing and in motion, covering the most ground with the least effort.”
Group Three:
GCHP Gwencalon’s Tam O’Shanter (15-inch Beagle)
Bred and owned by Dr. William and Kathleen Friend
“The third-place 15-inch Beagle is another complete package. He is a well-coupled miniature Foxhound, correctly balanced with good bone, legs, and feet. He uses himself well on the go and has the correct soft expression and square-cut muzzle. One can picture him working well with a pack.”
Group Four:
Ch. Dark Moon’s Black Tri Affair (Basenji)
Bred and owned by Veronica and John Predale and Michael Work
Click here to read the complete article“The fourth-place tri-colored Basenji is both short-loined and square, and his profile is accented by a very correctly set and carried tail. He presents the right picture standing and moving with his tireless, well-coordinated trot. He has the clean and agile look associated with the breed.”
