In the Spotlight: Breeder Owner Handler Tricia Stanczyk
Join us for an interview series where we get to know some of our most successful breeder-owner-handlers in purebred dogs.
How did you get started in the sport of purebred dogs, and did you have any mentors?
My best friend showed Pomeranians. I bought by first bench English Setter who already had a few points, so Amy encouraged me to try to finish his championship which I did! I grew up showing horses, so the transition seemed possible!!
I am so blessed to have many fabulous mentors who are not only friends but now family!
What dog has been most influential in your breeding program? Was this dog campaigned past its CH or did it find future success in the whelping box?
Honestly, BIS MBISS GCHS Posey Canyon No Brainer! Einstein has proven to be an incredible influence on our program. He has produced several champions. Multiple Best in Show Winners, Multiple National Specialty Winners, Montgomery County Kennel Club Bred By Exhibitor Group Winner, Westminster Winner, Multiple Specialty Winners and now, the next generation is also Best in Show, National Specialty, Westminster & Specialty Winners as well!! They have not only excelled in the show ring, but their temperaments are fantastic! The consistency is amazing!
Einstein had a wonderful show career earning an All Breed Best in Show, National Specialty Best of Opposite Sex, Specialty Wins and Multiple Group Wins.
Do you show your dogs yourself or do you use a handler? Do you place puppies in show homes?
I always show my dogs unless I have multiple entered. I have personally handled all of my dogs to their top wins. That being said, my professional handler friends I owe so much to. Their help, guidance and support have given me the confidence needed to compete at the highest level!
Along with my co-breeders, Joe Pavlic & Jennifer Johnston we have placed puppies in show homes. We have also sent puppies overseas. It must be the right person, who we feel will do right by the breed, as well as us.
Do you use limited registrations? If so, would you change anything about it?
I personally have not used limited registration. I have had the trust in all of my puppies owners. Long conversations and referrals have proven to me what the new owner’s intent is.
Tell us about your favorite win or memory in the sport of dogs.
I have so many!!!
After watching Westminster for years, to be able to finally compete was a memory of a lifetime. To win the breed and go to the group was exhilarating!
To win the Bred By Exhibitor Group at Montgomery County Kennel Club and then place again 4th four years later with the son was more than I can explain!!!
I have currently won 14 All Breed Best in Shows and 5 National Specialties with 5 different Parson Russell Terriers. I would not have ever believed that I would have had the success I have had when I started showing Parsons 22 years ago! It’s been an amazing journey with so many friends and supporters!
What advice would you give to someone else in the sport?
First and foremost – find a reputable breeder who is willing to answer a million questions! Never take for granted the person who helped you thru the thick and thin. This sport is not for everyone. You need to understand, if you are successful……YOU. WILL. HAVE. A. TARGET. on your back!
Your mentors can be from completely different breeds, professional handlers and friends. You must ask questions and be willing to listen and try. Some advice may work for you, some may not. If you want to be successful, you must put in the time to learn your breed, its grooming and presentation.
As a representative of the sport, please be considerate of the show grounds and hotels by cleaning up after your dog and yourself. Always thank your hosting kennel club and appreciate their volunteers!!
