1. How helpful have you found the various online and virtual educational opportunities which have been available for judges in the past few months and why?
I think for most of us who judge dogs, the hardest part of the current pandemic is the loss of being able to travel, see dogs and to judge dogs. I had assignments in the summer and fall I was excited about that included some of my new permit breeds. It is important to continue to see new breeds and different breeds to continue to learn. In my experience, having the Webinars, Canine College, and Kennel Visits on video was a great way to accomplish that. Since I am unable to attend National Specialties at this time, or have the opportunity to watch a breed ringside and get one on one mentoring, the Webinars offered the best opportunity to learn about new breeds, breeds I am currently judging, and increase my knowledge base about the history, form and function of breeds in all seven groups. Finding out how various breeds evolved, how they were developed, and their purpose has been an invaluable addition to understanding each breed and to help judging skills in the future. This has all been highlighted by the kennel visit videos put together by breed experts. Doing those can be a bit of a challenge with social distancing, but the presenters all did very well in showing a variety of types and exhibits.
I have also signed up for several Canine College Courses and it was wonderful for AKC to offer a discount during May! These courses are another great addition for getting a more in-depth education on individual breeds. I hope more breed clubs get on board and develop more courses for Canine College, they are extremely helpful.
