Barbara Shaw – AKC Judge

What are some of the positive outcomes which may result from requiring conformation judges to complete a course and exam on policies and procedures related to judging every 5 years?

For someone like me, the recertification (or whatever name is associated) is a good way to stay fresh on both policies and procedures. It is easier to be “on your game” when you are judging frequently every weekend. Infrequent judging gets you out of the rhythm of “innate” procedures and makes you rusty on newer changes to such.

Share your thoughts on three additional ways judges could be more effective in the ring.

I do not mean this to be impolite. Judges who are polite, smiling, and enjoy the breeds they judge are obvious to exhibitors and ringside observers. The latter of those three is VERY obvious to the exhibitors.

Do not be dismissive of the least of your exhibits.

Be as concerned for the breeds in your Owner Handled groups as you are in the breed ring. The exhibitors are very aware of your attitude and behavior.
