People are drawn to a certain breed for a wide variety of reasons. The Labrador Retriever, for his sweet disposition, the pleasing personality of the Golden Retriever, the German Shepherd Dog for his protective nature or the intelligence of the Border Collie. These qualities and more can also be found in other noticeably rarer breeds. Someone looking for a genuinely unique breed might just opt for a Peruvian Inca Orchid or a Pumi.
I think for most of us who have a passion for dog shows and show dogs, there is a rare breed that we would find truly interesting. For most Americans, however, their knowledge of purebred dogs begins and ends with those breeds that have a place on the American Kennel Club’s list of the ten most popular breeds. It should be interesting to note that the AKC recognizes 200 breeds, and the Federation Cynolgique Internationale (FCI) (a union of national kennel clubs, including Germany, Spain, Fance, Italy and many more) recognizes 356 breeds, but there are surveys that suggest there could easily be more than 400 purebred breeds of dogs worldwide.
Can Rare Be Relative?
