By Amy Fernandez

It’s often said that success breeds cynicism in this sport. After an individual reaches some imaginary threshold of big winning they cease to appreciate the beauty of the moment. Gabriel Rangel decisively disproves that idea. His amazement and appreciation of the experience can be dated to the story of his introduction to real-time big winning.

Just to lay the groundwork, Gabriel arrived here from Mexico just hoping for a chance to break into in this sport. At this point, he ranks among the VERY few professional handlers with three Westminster Bests to his credit.

The first one came in 2010 with Sadie, Ch. Roundtown Mercedes of Maryscot, under Elliott Weiss, who ranks among the greatest dog people this sport has ever seen. There was a time in history when Scotties absolutely dominated Westminster. They’ve won it eight times–Bardene Bingo, Braeburn’s Close Encounter and so many other iconic dogs that have truly left their mark on the breed and the sport. That sets a very high bar for anyone walking into the ring with a Scottie. Gabriel raised that bar even higher.

It’s fair to say there’s only one other breed that sets higher Westminster expectations, Wires. Incredibly, Gabriel checked that box in 2014 and 2019 with Ch. Afterall Painting the Sky and GCH. Kingarthur Van Foliny Home. Just to refresh, Sky was an almost totally white bitch that many critics dismissed as a non-contender. King was considered too old to offer serious competition. Wrong AND?wrong–and at this point, Gabriel has set so many records that we will skip the details for now.
