Wayne Cavanaugh’s article in this month’s issue titled Interesting Conflicts of Sharp Swords and Sharp Words is a great piece of writing that discusses the absence of courtesy and poor sportsmanship at dog shows across the country. Wayne specifically addresses the increasingly common occurrence of judges being confronted by exhibitors after making their choices.
I have written a few editorials over the past couple of years bemoaning the prevalence of bench show hearings at so many shows each weekend. I have written about the way we treat inexperienced exhibitors and, sometimes, spectators and the need to encourage them to enjoy and embrace the sport of purebred dogs rather than ignoring or mocking them, or even worse–being mean to them without provocation.
Deb Cooper’s March 19th Table Talk column highlighted a first-time exhibitor at a show in Louisville, whose two dogs misbehaved when left briefly in the grooming area. Unfamiliar with dog show etiquette, he didn’t know how his dogs should behave. Many of us have made similar mistakes while learning the ropes at our first shows. My hope is most of us had a better experience than the man Deb referenced in her column.
