By Tom Grabe

“So, who would you give your own, hard-earned money to buy a dog for you?”

That was the conversation starter between a group of successful dog men and women who were sitting around a big table and sharing a meal after a long day of showing dogs.

The demographics were impressive to say the least. Two were experienced, older handlers who had both won Best In Show at Westminster, and piloted dogs to #1 Dog of All Breeds. Four others were middle-aged and very accomplished in their own right with multiple #1 Dogs in group competition i.e. #1 Sporting Dog, etc. Two others were breeders of dogs of the caliber mentioned above, and they had bred over 100 champions, and owner/handled the majority of them to their championships along with some Best in Shows along the way. The final two were successful young, up-and-coming professional handlers who aspired to be like the others. A star-studded table to say the least.

“I would never let ANYONE buy a dog for me. I evaluate and buy all of my own stock,” said one of the breeders. “That’s not the challenge,” said the questioner. “You don’t have a choice. You must pick five people in the sport that you would trust with your money to pick out a great dog for you in the breed you specify. These five people can be a mix of judges, breeders or handlers–professional or non-professional, but at least three of them need to be active judges.”
