“You don’t know what you don’t know,” he said with an angry smile. “Huh?” I said. “Exactly!” he replied. “You think you know it all, but you don’t. You have a lot to learn my friend. If you don’t continue to listen and learn, you will never, ever succeed in this sport.”
Looking back, I have to admit he was right. I was 20 years old and pretty much knew it all. There was nothing anyone could tell me that I didn’t know already. As that very smart man tried to tell me, I was clueless. Luckily, I continued my quest for knowledge about the sport and dogs in general.
The article titled A Culture of Questioning Integrity Instead of Knowledge by Wayne Cavanaugh on page 74 of this issue jogged my memory about that verbal exchange with an incredibly successful handler who has since passed. Although the premise of Wayne’s article is not the same, the fact that knowledge trumps opinions when it comes to judging dogs applies to successfully showing and/or breeding great dogs.
Participating in the sport of purebred dogs is easy. Anyone can take a dog and bitch of the same breed and produce a litter of purebred puppies. Anyone can buy a purebred dog and a lead, enter it at a show and compete. It doesn’t take much to be a participant at a dog show.
