A great many people choose not to dwell on their mortality and even put off writing a will as long as they can, but we can do our dogs a favor by planning ahead for what should happen to them when we are gone.
For instance, well-meaning family members (who do not share the same concern for your pets) might think they are doing the right thing when they sell them to the first person who expresses an interest; or they might send your cherished canine companions to find new homes at some municipal animal shelter or breed rescue they know nothing about. Fortunately, there are a few ways to ensure your dogs do not end up in that type of situation.
Most estate planning attorneys would, I believe, agree that there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to estate planning. And, because of this, it is up to each of us to decide who will inherit what and when. These are, of course, very personal decisions and we need to carefully consider all available options. A wise course of action is to work with an experience estate planner, who will know and understand our wishes and ensure they are carried out in the most tax-friendly way possible.
