The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that Elder Abuse is a serious problem in our country. So much so that while living at home, one in ten adults age 60 and older are suspected to have suffered from abuse. To put these stats into perspective, according to the latest census in 2020, 74 million Americans are aged 60 and over. So, 10% or 7,400,000 Americans in this age group have suffered from elder abuse.
Elder abuse occurs in many forms, including financial, physical, psychological, verbal, sexual, and neglect. It can happen to anyone, is the oft-cited and collective opinion of numerous experts who study the Elder Abuse phenomenon, and it is a burgeoning public health crisis. However, the stats above are grossly underreported. AARP reports that the one aspect of financial exploitation upon which researchers and experts in the field agree is that the problem is vastly undercounted because most cases are never brought to the authorities’ attention. They add that researchers in New York State estimated that only 1 in 44 incidents of elder financial abuse were reported to Adult Protective Services. That statistic is stunning, infuriating, and heartbreaking.

Many of us know and are fond of someone who is elderly, whether in our sport or not. The crime of Elder abuse happens everywhere, every day, and it is rampant.
