Many years ago, I wrote a very popular column for the UK’s most successful canine publication. This assignment came about at an interesting time in dogdom; in the fallout of Pedigree Dogs Exposed when, it seemed, every ill was placed at the feet of ‘those evil pedigree dog breeders’.

Week-in and week-out, I was certainly never at a loss for what to write, and I had some fascinating exchanges and ‘disagreements’ with a whole host of colorful characters.

One that sticks in my brain was with a leading geneticist. She challenged, what she saw as, my inexcusable defense of ‘inbreeding’.

In my article, I had simply asked, ‘is all inbreeding bad?’ (I told you I enjoyed being controversial!) and went on to list the examples of the Syrian Golden Hamster and the Chillingham Cattle to support my question.
