Ah, the holidays: family, friends, gifts, big meals, and so many cherished rituals.

And then, there’s travel: exhaustion, uncertainty, delays, long waits, vast spaces, indifferent food, heavy luggage, fretful children. Basically, it’s a source of concentrated stress.

Of course, it isn’t exclusive to the holidays. Vacation travel, business travel, unanticipated travel—all offer the same mix and muddle.

It’s our cross to bear, and there’s nothing to be done. Or, is there?

This past Christmas I travelled from New York to Santa Fe. The return trip found me at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport waiting for a connecting flight. I staggered while dragging my luggage past bars and boutiques in search of a cup of coffee. Rounding a corner, I was surprised to find instead a man and a woman, seated comfortably in folding chairs, accompanied by a Leonberger. The dog was wearing a vest that said “Pet me.” A family was obeying enthusiastically, with encouragement from her handlers.

Well, this was a surprise, and far more stimulating than a cup of coffee. Leonbergers are imposing, but also golden, and fluffy. I had to know more.
