Congratulations to AKC Breeders; New Educational Resources Now Available
We celebrated some of our best breeders recently at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. The 2014 AKC Breeder of the Year award was presented to Gwen DeMilta and Carissa DeMilta Shimpeno for their Alisaton Doberman Pinschers. This mother-daughter pair has dedicated their lives to their passion, the Doberman Pinscher, and they breed for sound minds and bodies as well as top competitors in conformation, obedience and agility. Congratulations to them both!
The following group winners were also honored:
Sporting: Valerie Nunes-Atkinson and Yvonne Hassler-Deterding, VJK-MYST German Shorthaired Pointers
Hound: Jeanine Sudinski and Mechelle Sudinski-Stall, Lucene Dachshunds
Terrier: Matt Stander and Eugene Zaphiris, Cragsmoor Skye Terriers
Toy: Kathleen Kolbert, Turyanne Yorkshire Terriers
Non-Sporting: Rod and Patti Strand, Merry Go Round Dalmatians
Herding: Jim Buzzard, Buzzard Australian Cattle Dogs
Another highlight was our Best Bred-By Exhibitor in Show winner, GCH CH Flessner’s International S’Cess, a Bloodhound known as “Nathan” bred by Ryan and Chris Flessner and Heather Helmer, who beat out an entry of more than 1,000 dogs. The BBE entry at this year’s event represented approximately 25 percent of the total competitors entered in the National Championship. We’re proud to celebrate our breeders at this event each year.
New Educational Resources Available to Breeders
AKC Breeder-2-Breeder Seminar: This seminar was held for the second year the day before the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. Breeders Anne Bowes and Jimmy Moses, nutritionist Russ Kelley and theriogenologist Dr. Marty Greer presented, with AKC Assistant Vice President Mari-Beth O’Neill and Bowes moderating. The seminar covered the selection and evaluation of dogs for breeding purposes, neonatal and early puppy nutrition, the science of dog reproduction, and raising and training puppies. You can watch the “live” seminar in its entirety here, but the presentations and slides from each individual presenter are also available on the AKC YouTube page here.
Breeder E-Z Reg Webinar: Breeder E-Z Reg is an online alternative to the Full Litter Offspring Plus application, that gives breeders an efficient method of registering all of the puppies in their litters. Benefits include a $10 discount on each puppy registration, ensuring puppies are registered with the correct full or limited registration status, and locking in the puppy’s name, which can include your registered kennel name.
We recently held a webinar with AKC’s Director of Registration Services Linda Duncklee to help walk interested breeders through the process. The full-length version is available here, with a shorter overview here.
Biography: Stephanie Smith got her start in the sport of dogs as a Junior Handler and went on to exhibit her Golden Retrievers in both conformation and obedience. As AKC’s Club Communications Manager, she works to promote the events and good works of AKC clubs to the media, and also shares them on AKC platforms like AKCDogLovers.com, AKC homepage news and in AKC newsletters.
