Almost all major purchases require the signing of a contract. When you buy a house, you sign a contract. Buy a car, sign a contract. Even the purchase of cell phone (which we all seem inexplicably tied to) very often comes with a contract. Our dogs sometimes cost thousands of dollars, and should be considered, I believe, a major acquisition. Thus, the necessity of signing a contract should come as no surprise.
Contracts can be as unique as the breeders who draft them, but they should all contain the basic information you might expect, such as the name and address of both the breeder and buyer; the name of the puppy and a physical description as well as his or her AKC registration number; the names and registration numbers of the sire and dam; and of course, the purchase price. A good contract will also include the breeder’s representation and health certification.
