By Elaine Lessig

Yes, you read it correctly. Hooray for the West Volusia Kennel Club which held a three-day all breed cluster for the first time this year. Talk about a busy place? The weekend featured a never-ending array of activities that went way beyond the conformation rings. It was like a smorgasbord loaded with delicious options. With the 3 days of conformation, four-to-six-month puppy classes, Fast CAT, dock diving, Pee Wee, and an evening puppy match, the show had an exciting vibe. The joint was jumping. Susan Shepard, the show chair, and her committee had it all together. It was impressive to see how well all the events fit into the expanded three-event show format following the Thursday specialties. Topping it off was an indoor and outdoor array of food and product vendors which garnered lots of happy customers and great sales for the vendors. There was no doubt that all in attendance enjoyed the fun, easygoing atmosphere. The camaraderie was evident. The buildings were filled to the brim all day. Exhibitors did not show-and-go. They gathered around the rings to enjoy the dogs and the simple pleasure of being together. Around the Toy and Non-Sporting rings, in the smaller building, exhibitors with their colorful carts, grooming tables, and comfortable chairs filled the space with laughter and support for one another. Cheers could be heard as each new champion was crowned.
On the other hand, there was serious concern about a respiratory problem being experienced in our canine community. Apparently, the dogs get ill very quickly. From what I was told, there is no known treatment or cure. An identification of the source of the respiratory illness is still unknown which makes all the valiant attempts by the veterinary community to help the dogs a challenge. Some exhibitors chose to stay home either because they had a sick dog or dogs, or in an abundance of caution. Let’s hope more gets discovered about both the cause and a treatment.
