AKC Museum Of The Dog Explores The Development Of The Fox Terrier Breed

The American Kennel Club® Museum of the Dog is thrilled to announce its newest exhibit, “Outfoxed: Fox Terriers and Friends”, which will run January 24th through April 28th, 2024.

The exhibition is sponsored in part by the American Fox Terrier Club. Of all the breeds represented in the collection of the AKC Museum of the Dog, the Fox Terrier ranks among the highest with just under 100 depictions in paintings, prints, sculpture, and porcelain. Not just in sheer number, but also in the quality and importance of the dogs portrayed that makes this collection so special. For that reason, the museum felt it appropriate to mount its first exhibition devoted to a breed since the Museum’s re-opening in New York.

The exhibition Outfoxed: Fox Terriers and Friends will explore the development of the breed, the variety of their jobs and chronicle the many champions in the collection. The list of famous Fox Terriers in the show reads like a who’s who in the history of the breed. The visitor will encounter portrayals of such notables like Belgrave Joe, one of the early fathers of the breed, and Cackler of Notts, The Duchess of Newcastle’s masterpiece.

“It is an honor to be able to display this collection of art of one of the first breeds recognized by AKC,” said Alan Fausel, AKC Museum of the Dog’s Adjunct Curator, “To be able to give museum goers the opportunity to learn more about this fantastic breed and its history is exciting for us.”

And where would the Fox Terrier be without a supporting cast featuring their prey: foxes, rabbits, and rats as well as their companions the Foxhounds? Works showing the breed “on the job” will be featured prominently. The exhibition will be supported by images and documents supplied by the AKC Library and Archives noting Fox Terriers’ show successes and their place in popular culture.

American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog’s programs are made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. An opening reception for Outfoxed: Fox Terriers and Friends will be held for members and invited guests on January 23rd at 6:00pm.
