The American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog was established in 1982 around a distinguished collection of dog paintings, drawings and decorative objects. I’ve written about the Museum, its curator Alan Fausel, and some special exhibitions in previous issues of The Chronicle.
But, the Museum, especially after its move to New York City from St. Louis in 2019, determined to be not only a showcase for its collections, but an outward-facing community institution, offering educational programs and resources to students, researchers, and potential owners.
One of its programs is called Breed Spotlight in which one of the AKC’s 200 recognized breeds is showcased for the general public.
The aim is to entertain, engage, and inform, so that current and potential owners can hear from established figures in the breed, and get to meet exemplary specimens “up close and personal.”
On December 27th the spotlight was on the Pekingese, and as the featured breeder/handler was two-time Westminster Kennel Club Best In Show winner David Fitzpatrick, I hiked it up to the museum to learn more.
