A Gathering of Spaniels – 98th Flushing Spaniel Show

There was a chill in the air outside, but inside the Jacobs Center there was the warmth of the comradery of spaniel enthusiasts as the American Spaniel Club held its 98 Flushing Spaniel Show in Knoxville, Tennessee in January.

Hundreds of dogs bred for their unique ability to joyfully flush their quarry in the field descended on eastern Tennessee to be considered by an international panel of judges, including Jim Reynolds of Canada and Nigel Worth of Wales.

In the end, judge Mary Ann Alston selected the ASCOB Cocker Spaniel GCHP. Silverhall Strike Force from a stunning lineup of some of the nation’s top-winning flushing spaniels, marking the third time the Cocker Spaniel known as Striker has won BIS at this prestigious event.  Among the dogs in competition for Best in Show was the Clumber Spaniel, GCH. Clussexx Man of Steel, who was the 2016 ASC BIS winner. Also in the BIS lineup was the American Water Spaniel, GCHS. CarolinaÕs Running With The Hare BN RN SH JHR, and the Sussex Spaniel, GCHB. Kamand’s Full of Beans @Erinhill, all ranked in the top 20 of all Sporting dogs in 2017.

The English Springer Spaniel, GCHG. Telltale Statuette, and the Field Spaniel, GCH. Sandscape Who’s That Girl, along with Boykin Spaniel, GCH. Texas Trace Hudson Bend JH, Black Cocker Spaniel GCH. Clerwood Silhouette Speed of Light, Parti-Color Cocker Spaniel, Revolver JP Time Is On My Side (who won BV from the Open dog class), English Cocker Spaniel GCHS. Majestic’s She Got Whatever “It” Is, and Welsh Springer Spaniel Clussexx Got The Go Ahead From Stonecroft (who won the breed from the 12-18 month class) also won their breeds or varieties.

While celebrating some of the best dogs in the country, the American Spaniel Club also recognized some of the top Junior Handlers who show their flushing spaniels with such perfec- tion. The Best Junior in Show selected by judge Doug McFar- lane was Abigail Van Meter, showing GCHS. VC’s Chasing The Dream, a Parti-Color Cocker Spaniel. Reserve Best Junior in Show was Jonathon Wehry, showing GCHB. Cameo Siloet’s Gold Coast Legacy, an ASCOB Cocker Spaniel.
