As the baby boomers are aging, tips on maintaining our health and maximizing our quality of life are frequent topics of discussion. We know that better medical care and nutrition have contributed to a longer life span than we had just a couple of generations ago. The same is true for our pets.

Spanish Water Dogs were granted full recognition by the AKC as of January 1st, 2015. To say that we hit the ring running is somewhat of an understatement. Within 21 days we had our first Champion made up with several more dogs well on the way.

The 2015 Morris & Essex KC show is a wrap and many fanciers across the country are already counting down the minutes to the next edition of this quinquennial event. Thousands of words have been written celebrating this very special dog show and I am certainly not a capable enough wordsmith to try to better what has been written in the past.

Think about what is important to you. If you take a moment, it is pretty clear. Now think about what is important to your significant other, co-owner, breeder or neighbor. Understanding what is important to others will save you an incredible amount of grief and misunderstanding.

The Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced show-low-eetz-QUEENT-lee), or Xolo, is an ancient breed, but relatively new to AKC dog shows, having been added to the Non-Sporting group in 2010.

I bought my first show dog in 1971. The world of dog shows and purebred dog breeders has been turned on its axis several times since then. Since my beginnings in purebred dogs, there has been a revolution in my thinking.

What makes anyone more well-known than others? Why do some people who should be more successful regarding their achievements remain anonymous? Why do those interested turn to one particular breeder rather than others? What makes a breeder well-known and acclaimed internationally and what do others do that makes them unable to take one step further? And what does all this have to do with marketing?

This is not what I had in mind to think about this month, but sometimes you really have to go with your heart! I wrote the most of following soon after the loss of my eleven year-old German Shepherd Dog, “Silver”. I added to it and wanted to share my thoughts with you.
