Nancie Mages – A True Dog Person

We are sad to report our good friend Nancie Mages passed away in her sleep last night. Fanciers who have known Nancie over the past decade or so remember her as an owner of the top winning Border Collies shown by handler and good friend Kimberly Halcom. Nancie also owned big winning Weimaraners handled by Kim as well.

In addition to Border Collies and Weimaraners, she campaigned GCh. Pikkinokka’s Lightning Bug, the top winning Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever of all time shown by Don Powell & Stacy Einck-Paul.

Those in the Border Collie community remember Nancie’s effort on behalf of the breed and her service to the Border Collier Society of America.

I had the good fortune of meeting Nancie in the early 1980s. I was about 21 and showing my first Schipperke. Nancie was a top breeder and exhibitor of Schips and Belgian Tervuren among other breeds. Amy and I became fast friends with her and she was a great mentor early in our days as young handlers. The knowledge she passed along to us was invaluable.

Many will remember two of Nancie’s biggest winners, Ch. Shalako’s E.L. Fudge aka “Fudge” that she co-owned and bred with Betty Wynne, and Ch. Dream On’s One In A Million aka “Chance” that she showed for good friend and client Marcia Bailey. Chance went on to become the top winning Schipperke in breed history. It was a record that stood for quite some time.

Nancie was a great dog person and a better friend. She will be missed by her friends and family and she will be mourned by all who knew her. The sport of purebred dogs is missing one more point of light that will not soon be replaced.
