An Update Regarding the Murder of Afghan Breeder and Judge Peter Belmont
By Fran Reisman
As reported previously on caninechronicle.com, Peter Belmont was found murdered in his home in Kansas City, Kansas on December 16th, 2012. Peter was well-known and beloved in the hound world in which he was involved for over forty years. He bred many champions under the Elmo banner including top sires, conformation champions, and top producing dams.
The Kansas City Star reported that property of Peter’s was found in the apartment of the man who is now charged in his murder. This information came to light during a hearing at the Wyandotte County Court on Friday, August 30th, during a preliminary hearing for Darrell Lee Broxton, who is charged with first degree murder. At this hearing, a doctor testified that Peter had been beaten and his skull split open with a sharp-edged object such as a hatchet.
In early January, police found Peter’s van in the possession of a man named James Hunter, an associate of Broxtons. When Hunter first saw the van it was filled with items that, according to witnesses, were missing from Peter’s home. Apparently the items were sold for drugs and eventually Broxton traded the van to Hunter in exchange for more drugs. In April, Darrell Lee Broxton was arrested.
The preliminary hearing will continue this week. The judge will then determine if there is probable cause to have Broxton stand trial for the murder. When more information becomes available, I will report it to The Canine Chronicle.
