The Virginia Kennel Club will be offering a great educational opportunity at the end of April. A seminar focusing on Breed Type in a Breeding Program will be held on April 29 & 30, 2017. It will be presented by Pat Trotter, David Fitzpatrick, Beth Sweigart and Doug Johnson of Bugaboo Old English Sheepdog fame. That’s a lot of years of knowledge and experience! It’s not often that you can find this kind of breeding experience in one room, let alone have the chance to listen and talk to those experts at length. Folks can contact Dr. Robert Smith at (804) 769-0113 for more information.

Over 10,000 dogs were exhibited on Saturday, and again on Sunday at AKC conformation events across the country. I truly hope that this is demonstrative of an upswing in participation in our sport!

Well, this year my friends the weather has caused grief once again. The York cluster has cancelled it’s show for today due to inclement weather: judges are having great difficulty getting in; hopefully the weather will calm down and all will be ready for the show Thursday! The building will open at 3 p.m. today for exhibitors to unload, etc.

The Dog World Mourns the Loss of Joe Sanchez

Joe Sanchez 1986

The dog world was stunned by the sudden passing of longtime Mastiff breeder/exhibitor and purebred dog fancier Joe Sanchez last night. Nearly everyone in the sport knows the Sanchez family, and Joe was beloved by everyone who met him. Joe and his wife, Carla, started breeding Mastiffs under the Southport prefix in 1982. The produced numerous #1 Mastiffs, Best in Show, and National Specialty winners including many of the top winning Mastiffs in the history of the breed.

Today marks the first day of the North Florida Classic Cluster cluster in Tallahassee, FL. Day one includes two shows in one day. I’d love to hear from folks about how they feel about the two-shows-in-one-day concept. It would be interesting to hear the exhibitor’s perspective and their opinion of the impact on dogs. I took a quick look at the show schedule and felt badly for the professional handlers. I continue to be hesitant about this concept, especially for young dogs. I am not sure the “more show the better” concept is the right approach. It certainly didn’t work for Starbucks. Here’s hoping all goes smoothly.

Westminster 2017 from the Exhibitor’s Perspective

Another change exhibitors experienced this year was the ring surface. New carpet was used in the breed rings at the Pier and in the group ring at the Garden. Unfortunately, the new carpet gave many dogs and humans some trouble. Many exhibitors had bloody knees and several dogs experienced raw pads which resulted in an inability for them to move at their best.
