240 – The Annual, 2025-26

By Michael Canalizo

Every time I head out to judge a dog show, my partner, Juliandro, says to me, “Find a Star!”

Juliandro wasn’t immersed in the Dog Sport until he met me a few years ago. He has a wonderful, creative eye, and he excels as a drone video creator within the travel industry. Some of his work has caught the eye of many in our world after his videos of some major events around the world have been shared. We attend many shows together, and he was quick to observe something in a dog, even if he didn’t know exactly why it caught his eye. The coolest thing in his innocent attraction was he was almost always right in seeing something special in a dog.

After much conversation he understood that a core part of the judging process was to “evaluate breeding stock”–and to do that with an (expected) level of proficiency, one must be able to “see” something in a dog…at any age. I have shared, in most any conversation I have about judging, that my responsibility is to keep all of your “breeder instincts” in your head while judging. This means you should be prepared to “know” when a youngster with great promise is there in front of you…and equally prepared to have the confidence to reward their quality without hesitation. You just may be the first to “Find A Star!”
