Anyone reading this is obsessed with the dog biz. It’s quite understandable. It’s endlessly fascinating–and challenging. Mastering this realm requires so many skills. It’s about learning breed type and conformation, obviously. But there’s also ring strategy, genetics, interpersonal skills as well as dog psychology. It also requires a good grasp of animal husbandry, driving skills–okay, this is getting boring. The thing is, no one learns all this divergent, complicated stuff overnight. Obviously seminars, books, and podcasts help. However, uniting these fragments of knowledge into coherent dog sense–that only comes directly from a genuine expert.
This status is not the equivalent of “breed mentor” as defined by AKC. No, this category is miles above that one. And it’s unmistakable. Let’s see, a few examples include Bert Easdon in Pekingese, Ric Chashoudian in Terriers, Vicki Abbott in Maltese, George Alston in Irish Setters, Jim Moses in German Shepherds. Okay, point made, on to the real story.
Today, Jim easily qualifies for that status, and he doesn’t hesitate to give full credit to Ernest Loeb. Jim says, “Ernest was my main mentor…he was absolutely the most knowledgeable dog person I have ever been involved with in my lifetime. Ernest Loeb could tell more about a German Shepherd just watching him walk across the kitchen floor. Not only could he tell you everything about that dog in those ten seconds, nine out of ten times he knew the breeding.” Yeah, that’s a genuine, first-class expert.
