It has become increasingly clear that committed assistants are hard to come by these days. Whether it’s a live-in position or weekend role, our sport is facing a noticeable shortage of dedicated help.

As a live-in assistant, it brings me great sadness to think about what the future may hold for our sport—especially when it comes to education and mentorship of the younger generation.

Being an assistant is one of the most rewarding experiences in the world of dog handling. You have the opportunity to learn every facet of this profession firsthand—from the proper care and conditioning of each individual dog, to the intricacies of developing a successful breeding program.

Now, I won’t pretend that being an assistant is easy. It isn’t. The job requires long hours, weeks on the road, and very little sleep. But in return, you receive an education that is absolutely priceless.

Many individuals enter the sport of purebred dogs eager to make their mark as professionals. While that enthusiasm is admirable, the value of gaining experience as an assistant before taking that step cannot be overstated. The hands-on education and mentorship you receive in that role lays the strongest foundation for long-term success.
