This sport is losing the battle for public support–no secret there. Rather than endlessly debating the reasons why, let’s focus on solutions. One item rarely enters the conversation: the critical role of local all-breed clubs. Membership recruitment efforts invariably focus on parent clubs. The shows were small, but the vibe was tremendous.

Trudy Kawami, a veteran Dachshund breeder in Brooklyn, sees the big picture. “I’m happy that Brookhaven still has accessible shows on Long Island. This helps to develop new club members; they don’t have to travel to another state.” Hours of driving seems routine to us, but for most people, that’s a deal breaker.
